Bourke – Broken Hill – Unincorporated NSW. Funded by the Department of Social Services, the Drought Mental Health Program targets individuals and families in drought affected areas with a particular focus on farming families. It is delivered in Bourke, Broken Hill and Unincorporated NSW. The purpose of the program is to create awareness of and reduce stigma and discrimination around mental ill-health. Through the Drought Program, CatholicCare’s Mental Health team supports people with early symptoms of mental illness and assists them to access further support services if required. The Drought Mental Health Program aims to build resilience with individuals, families and communities living in drought affected areas. Services under the Drought Mental Health Program include: individual and group support community awareness events Participants do not require a formal diagnosis for mental illness.
Dubbo – Narromine – Forbes – Parkes – Bourke – Broken Hill and outreach in surrounding areas. Funded by the Department of Social Services and NSW Fair Trading, the Financial Counselling service is primarily accessible by families and individuals experiencing financial hardship and can support those effected by problem gambling. Financial Counsellors offer support with advocacy, negotiations, options, information and referrals and personal budgeting. Individuals are supported in making informed decisions to resolve their financial issues by accessing information specific to their circumstances. This program aims to empower individuals to gain an understanding and take control of their financial position. CatholicCare’s Financial Counsellors deliver community education to improve financial literacy within our communities and to raise awareness around problem gambling issues. The service aspires to increase consumer knowledge and confidence in the management of personal finances and develop financial skills with in communities for the ongoing future management of financial affairs. The PEDAL program is a school based playgroup model that targets families with children aged 0-5 years. The program provides play experiences that create opportunity to develop children’s social, emotional, physical, language and creative skills.

Funded by the NSW Department of Health, the Aboriginal Family Health Strategy program targets men (at all sites) and women (Narromine only), in relationships with a focus on early intervention and prevention of domestic and family violence. Parkes – Forbes – Bourke – Cobar. The Specialist Homelessness Services program is funded by the NSW Department of Family and Community Services. The overall goal of the Specialist Homelessness Service (SHS) are to ensure better outcomes for vulnerable people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Our services are working to strengthen the capacity of homeless services in our service areas of Forbes, Parkes, Cowra, Grenfell, Peak Hill, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Bourke and Cobar and achieve a better balance of prevention, early intervention and crisis support for our clients. Due to the Going Home Staying Home (GHSH) reforms and identifying the “gaps in service” in these communities, we are now able to assist young people, single males and females, families and women escaping domestic or family violence in all of the communities that we work in. Bourke – Brewarrina. Funded by the Department of Social Services, Reconnect is a community based early intervention program for young people (12-18 years) who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It is designed to reduce the impact of homelessness on the individual and the family and to help the young person and the family achieve family reconciliation where possible. Narromine – Dubbo. Funded by The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Indigenous Community Links program is an information and referral service delivering strategies aimed at connecting primarily Indigenous people and their families by referring and linking them to a range of mainstream and Indigenous Support Services including early childhood, education, training, employment, financial, housing, health and legal services. Indigenous Community Links also delivers the following: Advocates on behalf of clients on identified issues Facilitates identified workshops with partnered services and/or agencies Provides a client computer with which to use the internet to link into Centrelink, Housing and Employment websites Operates as an outreach activity to identified services and community events in both Narromine and Dubbo.

Funded by the Department of Social Services, the Personal Helpers and Mentors program (PHaMs) provides increased opportunities for recovery for people whose lives are impacted by severe mental illnss by helping them to overcome social isolation and increasing their connectedness to community. The objectives of PHaMS are to ensure that people with mental illness have: Improved ability to live as functioning community members Confidence to seek assistance to meet needs Improved take-up of relevant services Timely access to early intervention and prevention assistance Targeted assistance across the life course that is customised to maximise help during transition phases.

Parkes – Peak Hill. With the generous support of the Northparkes Mines, the Strong Young Mums program is delivered in Parkes and Peak Hill. The program targets mothers under the age of 25 years and their children. The Strong Young Mums program provides: Parent education Supported playgroups Individual support, training and education for mothers preparing to return to or enter the workforce History – CatholicCare originally established the Strong Young Mums program in Bourke in September 2005 with funding from the Australian Government through the Stronger Families and Community Strategy. Strong Young Mums was established in response to the high occurrence of teenage pregnancies in Bourke. Strong Young Mums connects women with the education system and early intervention programs and conducts regular activities to engage mothers with other services and support networks. The young women also participate in weekly play groups and social gatherings which are attended by health and early childhood professionals as well as older women who act as mentors for the young mums. Western NSW – Based in Dubbo. CatholicCare delivers the Tenant Participation Resource Service (TPRS) program in central and western NSW. Our program is a NSW Department of Family and Community Services initiative that aims to provide social housing tenants with increased access to information, advice and education opportunities to more actively participate in processes related to their housing, as well as to engage in their communities. The TPRS program aims to assist: Social housing tenants to engage in communities Social housing tenants needs and priorities are identified and considered in planning and service delivery Social housing tenants are informed about their rights and responsibilities and are supported with their housing needs Social housing tenants have skills and resources to participate in community life Social housing tenants receive services that are coordinated, flexible and responsive to their needs. Funded by the Department of Social Services, the Communities for Children program is delivered through subcontracted Community Partners in the Dubbo, Narromine and Wellington communities and targets families with children aged 0-12 years. This program provides support for family and carers of people suffering from mental illness and aims to ensure that: The families and carers of people with a mental illness have access to appropriate information and options for support at all points within their caring journey, at the time they need it. Information and support is delivered in a sensitive, evidence-based, and cost-effective manner. The program is delivered in partnership between area health services and Non Government Organisations (NGO) and between the NSW and Australian Governments. CatholicCare works in collaboration with the area mental health services and the Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Office, and will involve and support other NGOs and community groups, families and carers and consumers within the jurisdiction of the area serviced by Greater Western Area Health Service to deliver these support services.
