Bourke – Broken Hill – Unincorporated NSW. Funded by the Department of Social Services, the Drought Mental Health Program targets individuals and families in drought affected areas with a particular focus on farming families. It is delivered in Bourke, Broken Hill and Unincorporated NSW. The purpose of the program is to create awareness of and reduce stigma and discrimination around mental ill-health. Through the Drought Program, CatholicCare’s Mental Health team supports people with early symptoms of mental illness and assists them to access further support services if required. The Drought Mental Health Program aims to build resilience with individuals, families and communities living in drought affected areas. Services under the Drought Mental Health Program include: individual and group support community awareness events Participants do not require a formal diagnosis for mental illness.

Broken Hill. Funded by the Department of Social Services, the Personal Helpers and Mentors program (PHaMs) provides increased opportunities for recovery for people whose lives are impacted by severe mental illnss by helping them to overcome social isolation and increasing their connectedness to community. The objectives of PHaMS are to ensure that people with mental illness have: Improved ability to live as functioning community members Confidence to seek assistance to meet needs Improved take-up of relevant services Timely access to early intervention and prevention assistance Targeted assistance across the life course that is customised to maximise help during transition phases.
Broken Hill – Dubbo – Orange. This program provides support for family and carers of people suffering from mental illness and aims to ensure that: The families and carers of people with a mental illness have access to appropriate information and options for support at all points within their caring journey, at the time they need it. Information and support is delivered in a sensitive, evidence-based, and cost-effective manner. The program is delivered in partnership between area health services and Non Government Organisations (NGO) and between the NSW and Australian Governments. CatholicCare works in collaboration with the area mental health services and the Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Office, and will involve and support other NGOs and community groups, families and carers and consumers within the jurisdiction of the area serviced by Greater Western Area Health Service to deliver these support services.
Bathurst – Broken Hill – Forbes – Lithgow – Mudgee – Oberon – Orange – Parkes – Wilcannia – White Cliffs. Funded by the Department of Social Services, the Family Mental Health Support Service provides support for vulnerable families with children and young people who are showing early signs of, or are at risk of developing mental health. Services provided include a range of flexible, responsive, non-clinical mental health support services to meet the needs of children and young people affect by, or at risk of mental illness and their families and carers. The Family Mental Health Support Service offers three levels of support: Intensive, long term, early intervention support for children, young people and their families which may include: assessment and identification of needs; practical assistance and home based support; linking with other relevant services; and targeted therapeutic groups. Short-term immediate assistance for families which may include: assessment of needs; information or referrals; and limited direct support. Community outreach, mental health education and community development activities which may include: organisation of and participation in community events; and general group work in the community.
